Nike is back with a new edition of their boot designed for speed and intended to suit players who want to inject an extra level of pace in their game ¨C the Mercurial Vapor IX. This is a boot that will literally scream at players to wear them. They have a sophisticated arrogance that will match any player who believes they can make things happen during a game.
Simply look at the players that are currently sporting the range and you will start to see what they are all about; Zlatan Ibrahimovich, Eden Hazard and Didier Drogba just to name a few. Then there is CR7, or Cristiano Ronaldo, who has already designed, worn and released a ¡°limited edition¡± of his own pair. But what makes these boots even more unique is the fact that they have an upper that will offer advantages to defensive minded players also. It is probably one of the few Mercurial releases that will provide defenders with a speed boot option.
When you look at the history of the Mercurial Vapor range, there have been plenty of alterations and each version strives to be a little more advanced than the last. The one thing that is noticeably different on this boot is the materials used in the upper. The dimpled texture is quite unique and definitely has the look and feel of a golf ball to the touch. But, on this boot it is less about aerodynamics and more about creating a surface that provides ultimate touch and control on the ball.
Personally, I felt like Nike provided a pretty fantastic performing upper on the Vapor VIII. Those that have worn those boots will know that they had a suede feel to them and offered a very skin tight fit. It is difficult to describe just how the upper on this latest version reacts to the movement of your feet, but I would compare it to a slightly stretched balloon. When you run your fingers across it, it sorts of folds under your touch and bounces immediately back. It has the ability to really contour your foot, with the dimple texture adding a padded feel as you take the ball in to your feet. The benefit to a material like this is that it doesn¡¯t scuff easily and offers a fresher look for longer while still providing a minimal amount of material between you and the ball.
On release, we were treated to two pretty in-your-face colorways ¨C a Fireberry and a Sunset. If you don¡¯t like bright and flashy, these are probably not going to suit your taste. But there are visual cues included on this boot that are intended to provide your teammates with something they can lock-in on. We have seen similar colorways used on previous Vapor releases, but none with the type of gradient these offer. From forefoot to heal, there is a gentle transition that creates a slick look.
The one thing that has stayed consistent between the VIII and the IX is the soleplate, with Nike sticking to the same configuration right through the soleplate. The two-blade heel design has been a real talking point and provides players with something completely different to other releases on the market. The idea is that two-blades penetrate and help you accelerate from the surface in a much more efficient manner. Actually, the same goes for the entire soleplate with thin, very dynamic blades biting through the surface as you take each stride.
Finally, Nike¡¯s innovative All Conditions Control (ACC) technology is placed on the upper and further aids performance; the special treatment now used on all Nike boots ensures a consistent touch whether playing in wet or dry weather.
